AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC
This position will allow you to use your expertise in automotive repair and maintenance. This position starts at a salary of $25.17 (WG-10, Step 1) to $29.38 (WG-10, Step 5) with promotion potential to $29.38/hr (WG-10 Step 5). As an automotive mechanic with Customs and Border Protection, you will become a valuable member of a team of professionals supporting homeland security functions. Typical work assignments include:
Troubleshooting, repairing and/or overhauling major automotive components and systems Identifying mechanical and operational problems utilizing a wide variety of test equipment, including computerized engine analyzers, compression testers, multi-meters, and other equipment common to the occupation Completing repairs and installations with little or no technical advice Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. To minimally qualify for the WG-10 grade level you must meet the Screen Out Element/s Technical Abilities. To meet the screen out element, you should haveexperience performing the following duties:
Troubleshooting and repairing a variety of automotive systems such as engines, transmission and gear reduction systems, transaxles, drive line and rear axle assemblies, electrical and electronic systems, fuel injection systems, emission control systems, braking systems, hydraulic and other assemblies. Interpreting and applying manufacturer's repair manuals, schematics, diagnostic codes and safety manuals sufficient to accomplish these tasks and be familiar with all tools, equipment, and materials used by automotive mechanics. Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Ability to work independently, make decisions, accept job responsibility, exercise initiative and plan operations.
