Great Ecology is seeking applications for on-call Environmental Compliance Monitors for a large construction project in Imperial Valley, CA.
Environmental Compliance Monitors will monitor and report on a variety of pre-construction and construction activities to ensure compliance with biological regulations and regulatory permit requirements.
This position is on-call, but may require up to 35 hours per week of field-based work.
Work may begin as early as April.
Each monitor will oversee environmental compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, which will include oversight of biological resources and site housekeeping; fire; dust; hazardous materials; noise; invasive species and soil-borne pathogens; erosion and sediment control; and restoration mitigation requirements, as well as coordinating with project team members and construction supervisors and crew members.
This is an early career position for a safety-oriented person with a work or educational in ecology, biology, wildlife biology, environmental science, or related natural resource field.
Prior biological construction monitoring experience is preferred, but candidates with relevant experience will be considered.
Duties will include, but are not limited to:
Reviewing and interpreting resource agency permit requirements and providing direction and critical judgement on environmental compliance issues; Conducting compliance monitoring, field inspections and field survey work during all stages of construction work in designated areas; Critically assessing environmental conditions in the field to evaluate potential environmental impacts from construction; Evaluating potential issues and concerns ahead of construction activities; Overseeing and verifying flagging of wetland boundaries, cultural, paleontological and biological resources exclusion zones, refueling zones, etc.
; Overseeing the proper implementation of mitigation measures; Inspecting and documenting compliance with a project's environmental requirements by preparing daily written inspection reports that provide up-to-date and consistent written and photo documentation of activities observed in the field; Coordinating with project team members and construction supervisors and crew-members; Leading and/or participating in daily safety briefings; Providing environmental awareness training to construction crews; Using GPS for navigating and recording data in the field; Reporting potential permit violations in accordance with approved communication plans and ordering work stoppage if necessary; Interacting with and serving as an onsite point of contact with contractors, clients and other project members; Participating in various construction meetings; Adhering to Great Ecology's Health and Safety Plan and all standard operating / field protocols; and Performing additional tasks or duties as assigned or required.
The position requires the ability to work approximately 35 hours per week in a physically demanding, remote position.
Early morning and weekend work is required.

Graduate students or college seniors majoring in Biology, Ecology, or other related natural resource field are encouraged to apply (directly relevant work experience may be substituted for a degree); Strong verbal and written communication skills; Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills; Ability to work independently in remote conditions; Be authorized to work in the U.
S.
; and Must have a valid driver's license and auto insurance.
Preference may be given to applicants who provide these skills:
Experience with construction monitoring, compliance monitoring, and/or ecological fieldwork; Experience with report writing; Experience with 4x4 or UTV; Leading field crews; Working in hot environments; and Knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Western United States.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
